Why People Space Out Their Hashtags
The technique exists to serve two audiences at once. Followers see a clean caption — the story or message with no tag clutter — while the hashtags still sit in the caption for search and discovery. Pushing the tags below the visible opening gives the post its best foot forward without giving up the reach tags provide.
The spacer works because Instagram truncates captions in the feed around the first 125 characters or so, showing the opening lines and a More link. Blank filler lines placed after the main text move the hashtag block past that cut, where it waits for anyone who taps through.
It is a cosmetic trick with a functional payoff: the caption reads better, the tags still work, and the post does not look like it was written by a tag farm.
The spacer is also useful for credit and collab lines, which many creators push below the fold along with hashtags so the visible caption stays focused on the post itself. Same technique, cleaner result.
How Many Blank Lines Do You Need?
The goal is to push the first hashtag past the More fold, and the number of filler lines depends on the length of your caption. A short caption needs more filler; a long caption may need only a few lines to clear the truncation point.
Start with five to seven spacer lines, then verify on a phone: the feed preview should show the caption and a clean break, with hashtags only appearing after tapping More. If the first tag still peeks into view, add a line or two; if the spacer looks excessive, trim.
Remember that truncation varies by device and text length, and Instagram may strip or collapse some fillers on save. Re-generate the spacer after editing the caption, and keep the plain caption text saved separately.
The More fold is not a fixed line — it moves with caption length and screen size, so what is hidden on one phone may peek out on another. Design the spacer for the smallest screen in your audience and the fold will take care of the rest.

Instagram can strip invisible fillers or normalize empty lines when a caption is posted or later edited. Different filler characters are filtered at different times, so a spacer that survived last month may not survive this month. Regenerate the spacer with the current tool output, keep the caption itself short enough that the fold does the work, and verify the published result from a follower’s view. If you post frequently, save the working spacer as a template and re-paste it each time — just re-verify it whenever Instagram updates its filters.
