Why Designers Use Dummy Text
Placeholder text exists to protect the design review. When a mockup is filled with real, readable English, stakeholders naturally start reading it—and once people read, they start editing the words: questioning the headline, rewriting the paragraph, and arguing about copy that is only standing in for the real content that has not been written yet. The review that was supposed to be about hierarchy, spacing, and layout turns into a line-editing session.
Dummy text keeps the focus on the visual system instead. Because it is obviously not final copy, reviewers treat it as the placeholder it is and evaluate the design itself: whether the type scales work, whether the spacing breathes, whether the module fits its grid. That is the whole point of a layout review, and it is why professional designers reach for placeholder text before the content team finishes writing.
The other reason is speed. A wireframe or prototype does not need finished prose to communicate structure—it needs shapes that suggest where text will live. Generating a few paragraphs of placeholder text takes seconds and lets the designer, developer, or product owner evaluate the page without waiting for editorial.
Standard vs. Modern Placeholder Text
Classic Lorem Ipsum descends from a scrambled passage of Cicero’s De Finibus, a first-century BC treatise on ethics. Over the centuries its words were chopped, reordered, and padded into the familiar pseudo-Latin rhythm, and that version became the default placeholder across print and web design. Its virtue is neutrality: it resembles English closely enough in shape and length distribution to fill space realistically, while being too unfamiliar to read as meaningful copy.
Modern placeholder generators offer thematic alternatives—hipster, cat, corporate, or custom-word text—that trade neutrality for character. Thematic text can make a mockup feel more alive when the design belongs to a specific brand or voice, and it can help sell a concept to a client who finds abstract Latin cold. The trade-off is that themed text is still readable, so it invites exactly the kind of copy review that plain Lorem Ipsum avoids.
The practical rule: use classic Lorem Ipsum for neutral layout testing and internal wireframes, and switch to themed or custom placeholder text when the context—a brand presentation, a themed landing page—calls for a warmer stand-in. Either way, make sure the placeholder clearly is not final copy, so nobody mistakes it for approved content.
