The Four Native WhatsApp Formatting Tricks

WhatsApp has four native text styles, each triggered by wrapping text in a symbol: asterisks for *bold*, underscores for _italics_, tildes for ~strikethrough~, and three backticks for ```monospace```. The styles render inside WhatsApp itself, which makes them cleaner and more reliable than pasted Unicode.

The symbols must touch the text they style — no space between the asterisk and the word — and they style only the wrapped portion, so a message can mix bold words and plain words freely. The formatting is applied automatically as you type; there is no toolbar.

The four styles cover nearly everything WhatsApp users search for. If a message shows the raw symbols instead of the style, the usual cause is a space inside the markers or an autocorrect that replaced the symbol with a smart character.

The styles combine with each other — bold inside monospace, italics around a quoted phrase — and they survive group chats and broadcasts exactly as typed. WhatsApp renders the formatting on the recipient’s device, so the styles need no special font and no app on either end.

WhatsApp Native Font Options

WhatsApp itself does not install a custom font for recipients — the typeface you see is decided by the app and the operating system, and a message arrives in the recipient’s font, not yours. What users can change locally is the display: font-size and accessibility settings in WhatsApp and the system control the size of text on their own screen.

The “WhatsApp fonts” people search for usually resolve into one of two things: the native symbol styles above, which change character appearance, or a change to the local display size, which changes nothing for anyone else.

That is the honest limit: you can style characters and adjust your own view, but you cannot make your messages render in a chosen typeface on another person’s phone.

Status updates and broadcast lists follow the same rules, and formatted text in a Status is read once — which makes the native styles ideal there, since a bolded line costs the reader nothing to parse.

For the rare case where the native styles are not enough, pasted Unicode still renders in WhatsApp messages — but it depends on the recipient’s device fonts and should be treated as decoration, never as the carrier of essential words like addresses or codes.
