How to Spoiler Images and Links
Text spoilers use the double-pipe syntax: ||hidden text||, with no space needed between the pipes and the content. Anything between the pipes renders as a black bar that reveals on click or tap, which makes the feature a conversation tool rather than a filter — the reader chooses to see the content.
Images and files use a different mechanism: prefix the filename with SPOILER_ before uploading, and Discord automatically presents the file as a spoiler that blurs until the viewer reveals it. Links, meanwhile, are not spoilered by wrapping — the URL preview behaves independently of the text around it, so keep sensitive URLs inside spoiler text rather than expecting the preview to hide.
The two mechanisms share a philosophy: spoilers protect the reader from unwanted exposure, not from the content itself. Nothing about a spoiler prevents a determined viewer from seeing what is underneath, which is exactly why etiquette matters more than syntax.
One detail that surprises people: spoiler text inside a message with other content stays independently hidden, so you can mix a visible question with a spoilered answer in the same line. That makes the syntax ideal for riddles and quiz channels, where the reveal should wait for the reader’s choice.
When to Use Spoilers
Spoilers are for content that loses its value when seen early: movie and series plots, game endings and boss reveals, and the answers to puzzles or riddles in progress. They are also the standard tool for trigger warnings and sensitive subject matter, letting members opt into a topic instead of stumbling into it.
Server etiquette sharpens the rule. When a new release drops, the considerate pattern is to keep discussion spoilered for a grace period, then unspoilered after a community-agreed window. When in doubt, spoilering costs nothing and unsolicited reveals cost goodwill.
Moderation teams use spoilers the same way: a warning message can hide its specifics behind the bar, keeping the channel readable while still informing the people who need the detail.
Preguntas frecuentes
How do I reveal spoiler text?
Click or tap the covered spoiler area, and Discord reveals the content underneath for you without changing the original message for anyone else. On desktop the spoiler unblurs on click; on mobile the same tap applies. There is no setting needed, and revealing is per-viewer — the message stays spoilered for every other member who has not clicked it. If you want to read spoilered content without clicking each one, Discord’s user settings offer a toggle to show all spoilers; the choice remains the reader’s either way.
Can I make a spoiler reveal automatically?
No. Spoilers are intentionally user-controlled: automatic or timed reveal would defeat the feature’s purpose, and Discord does not provide any such option. If you want every reader to see the content, do not use spoiler syntax at all — a spoiler is a promise that the reader remains in control of what they see.
