What Is Underlined Unicode Text?

The tool adds the combining low line, U+0332, after each supported character. The underline is part of the text itself rather than a rich-text decoration, so it survives copy-paste into fields that would strip a formatting toolbar’s underline — bios, captions, comments, and chat messages alike.

Like the other combining styles, the line is drawn per character, which gives underlined words a slightly segmented look compared with a word processor’s continuous rule. For short emphasized phrases the effect is clean; for long runs the per-character seams become visible.

The combining low line also sits close under the baseline, which means descenders — the tails of letters like g, j, p, q, and y — can overlap or touch it. Most fonts handle the collision gracefully, but it is worth checking any word with descenders before publishing.

Why Use It?

Underline is the formatting orphan of social media: most platforms offer no native underline for bios or captions, so the rare creator who wants it must smuggle it in as characters. That makes the style useful for short emphasis in profile lines, chat labels, and captions where a single word needs a different treatment from its neighbors.

Use underline sparingly, because the web has trained readers to expect underlined text to be a link. An underlined word in a bio invites a click that leads nowhere, so reserve the style for decorative or label-like contexts — a heading inside a profile, a brand accent — rather than words that look interactive.

Underline also pairs well with structured profiles: a section label, a location line, or a “currently” marker underlined once reads as an organizing device, giving a bio structure without relying on emoji or separators. One or two underlined lines are a design choice; a page of them is noise.

Combining Underline With Other Styles

Combining marks stack: an underline character can be added to text that is already bold, italic, or otherwise styled, because the marks attach to whatever letter they follow. The practical catch is that support for exotic stacks is inconsistent, so an underlined bold italic string may render perfectly on one device and fall apart on another.

Unicode does not provide one dedicated “underline plus bold” block the way it provides bold italic, so combining the effects always relies on stacking marks. Test the result in the exact field you plan to publish, and keep the plain-text original for any destination that rejects the stack.
